Celebrating and recognizing The Sight Center of Northwest Ohio for 100 years of dedicated service to the blind community.
Summary
WHEREAS, the Toledo Society for the Blind was established in 1923, after Joseph F. Clunk advocated for the blind and petitioned local leaders of the Lions Club, Community Chest, and Chamber of Commerce to establish an organization to service the blind community; and
WHEREAS, Clunk, blind himself, believed that the blind could live and work independently, just as any other person; the renamed agency, The Sight Center of Northwest Ohio, continues to be committed to an ideal goal that all who are blind or have low vision will live with dignity and respect; and
WHEREAS, motivated by a mission to empower independence and enrich the lives of people who are blind or visually impaired, The Sight Center offers a unique blend of programs and services that can help people of all ages work, learn, play and live independently with permanent vision loss; and
WHEREAS, The Sight Center continues to educate their clients from the low vision clinic to the high-tech assistive devices, daily living adaptations, home safety enhancements, white cane training and caregiver support; through all of these practices, lives are forever changed; and
WHEREAS, supported since its founding by generous donors, tireless volunteers and dedicated staff, the non-profit 501(c) 3 organization, serves an 18-county region in Northwest Ohio as well as parts of Southeast Michigan and Central Ohio; and
WHEREAS, with certified and credentialed staff, national accreditation, and a century of blindness and low vision expertise, The Sight Center stands alone as the only comprehensive low vision resource center in the entire region; NOW, THEREFORE,
Be it resolved by the Council of the City of Toledo:
SECTION 1. That we recognize and celebrate The Sight Center of Northwest Ohio for their 100 years of service to the blind community.
SECTION 2. That this Resolution shall take effect and be in force from and after the earliest period allowed by law.
