Recognizing Ms. Burniece Chambers on her 100th birthday

 

Summary

WHEREAS, Burniece Chambers (and her twin sister Beatrice Potts) was born on January 12, 1925. They were delivered by Dr. Harris while at home on City Park Avenue; and

WHEREAS, the twins father passed away when they were just two years old, after which Burniece and her sister were raised by their mom, residing in the Nebraska Avenue and Division Street area. Miss Chambers attended Toledo Public Schools: Gunckel Elementary, Jones Junior High, and Libbey High School; and

WHEREAS, Miss Chambers was raised in the local Episcopal Church, where she attended for almost half her life; she since attends Grace Communion in Maumee, Ohio; and

WHEREAS, Miss Chambers began her career in cosmetology and proudly owned her own salon; driven by a desire to do more, she returned to school and earned a teaching degree from Mary Manse College on Collingwood Avenue, later obtaining a Master’s degree from Bowling Green State University; and

WHEREAS, Miss Chambers returned to Toledo Public Schools, however, this time as a teacher; teaching at both Oakdale Elementary and high school levels; retiring from Waite High School, after 30 years of dedicated service; and

WHEREAS, a passionate world traveler, Miss Chambers has visited every continent except Antarctica; her global adventures include receiving a certificate for climbing the Great Wall of China, riding a camel through the Egyptian desert and visiting the pyramids, sailing the Nile River, riding an elephant in Thailand, going on an African safari, attending a bullfight in Mexico, bathing in the Dead Sea, and traveling from Moscow to St. Petersburg-where she attended a ballet performance and saw the finest ballerina of her life; and

WHEREAS, in a recent interview, Miss Chambers encouraged all to remember “you have a choice”, and making the right choices determines your life’s path; she also encouraged listening and respect.

NOW, THEREFORE, Be it resolved by the Council of the City of Toledo:

SECTION 1:  That Miss Chambers is celebrated not only for her remarkable life and accomplishments, but for the love, wisdom, and inspiration she has shared with generations of family, friends, students, and community members.

SECTION 2. That we celebrate Miss Burniece Chamber on her 100th birthday; and we recognize that her legacy shall be always making choices to do what was right and good.
