Title
Recognizing October as Domestic Violence Awareness Month in the City of Toledo.
Summary
WHEREAS, Domestic Violence Awareness Month is observed each October to raise awareness, support survivors, honor victims, and promote prevention; and
WHEREAS, domestic violence remains a national crisis, affecting more than one in three women and one in six men during their lifetime; and
WHEREAS, intimate partner violence affects people of all backgrounds and causes lasting harm to individuals, families, and communities; and
WHEREAS, domestic violence remains a significant concern in Toledo, accounting for approximately 18 percent of criminal case filings and representing the most charged offense in 2024; and
WHEREAS, Toledo City Council's investment in domestic violence prosecution has strengthened victim support and offender accountability under the leadership of Chief Prosecutor Facey and the Domestic Violence Unit; and
WHEREAS, the City of Toledo's Domestic Violence Prosecutor Unit has increased conviction rates, improved victim engagement, and reduced case resolution times since its creation; and
WHEREAS, felony convictions involving repeat domestic violence offenders increased from 252 in 2022 to 336 in 2024, highlighting both successful intervention efforts and the ongoing need for prevention and support services; and
WHEREAS, Toledo's progress demonstrates that dedicated resources, strong partnerships, and community awareness improve survivor outcomes and enhance public safety.
NOW, THEREFORE, Be it resolved by the Council of the City of Toledo:
SECTION 1. That the Toledo City Council hereby recognizes October as Domestic Violence Awareness Month in the City of Toledo
SECTION 2. That council honors the Domestic Violence Prosecutor Unit, law enforcement, victim advocates, shelters, service providers, and community organizations working to support survivors and prevent domestic violence.
