Where are we anticipating increased traffic congestion in August, from the consolidation of TPS schools, and how can we proactively alleviate some of these issues?

Referral Response:

The impacts from the TPS Transformation Plan are not known at this time. Factors that will impact traffic at these schools include the realignment of school start times, bussing or transportation options for students that are affected, and where some of the 7 & 8 graders choose to go if they want to enter a career tech program that is starting at some high schools.

After an overview of the TPS plan, all of the schools will still be under the capacity that they were built for. The first two weeks of school are always difficult as parents and students readjust to the new schedule and traffic tends to calm down after that. It's important to remember that these traffic issues are not unique to any one school and generally only last 15-20 minutes. We prefer that the schools are able to handle all drop off-pick up traffic within school site but recognize that this is not a possibility for all.

There are always options to implement walking school bus programs with remote drop off locations, and encourage more car-pooling, which will lessen the burdens of the car line and general traffic around the schools.  These programs are run through parent volunteers and/or the schools themselves, with start-up help from the Safe Routes to School program.

Discussions will happen with our SRTS coordinator and TPS staff to see where they may need help or anticipate issues. Traffic Management will be available to help if school traffic impacts the flow on the main corridors around the schools.
