Over the past three years, sick time payouts for exempt employees have averaged approximately $22,000 a year. We would expect at least that amount for 2026 following the changes. However, it is difficult to predict the exact budgetary impact since the payouts will be dependent on the amount of sick time that an employee used in the previous year and the amount of sick time that an employee chooses to have paid out. Any sick time that an employee gets paid out on an annual basis will ultimately result in savings to the City at the time of retirement/termination, as the employee’s rate will increase throughout their employment, resulting in a higher sick time severance amount.
