RE: Council Referral No. 109-24 - Police Lawsuits
REFERRAL:
For the past five years, how many lawsuits have alleged the Toledo police used excessive force or exhibited similar conduct. Also, as a result of these suits how much has been paid to the victims. Lastly, have any police policies been changed as a result.
RESPONSE:
Absent the recent Pratt settlement for $400,000.00 there have been 21 suits filed against Toledo
police officers that would be considered responsive to the referral.
The City has paid out
$121,300.00 in response to these actions.
The only changes of note related directly to the request are a recent change to limit the use of wooden bullets in mass protest situations as well as a change in the pursuit policy.
