Recognizing the 100th anniversary of the Ohio Theatre and the permanent residence of the Children’s Theatre Workshop.
Summary
WHEREAS, the Ohio Theatre, in the heart of the Lagrange Street Polish Village, is celebrating its 100th Anniversary and the permanent residence of the Children’s Theater Workshop; and
WHEREAS, the Ohio Theatre opened its doors to the public on February 28, 1921 playing the film The Mark of Zorro starring Douglas Fairbanks; and
WHEREAS, the Ohio Theatre, originally owned by the Lagrange Street Amusement Company was bought at public auction by Rosa Bialorucki in 1923; Rosa’s son Edward and his wife Bernadette ran the theatre until it closed in 1975 when it was purchased by St. Hedwig’s Catholic Church to be used as the church’s cultural center; and
WHEREAS, the Ohio Theatre changed ownership a few more times until in 2020, the Children’s Theatre Workshop of Toledo bought the Theatre, making it the first permanent home of the CTW since it was founded in 1954; and
WHEREAS, the Children’s Theatre Workshop offers an inclusive environment for young people of all backgrounds, cultures, and lifestyles to have the opportunity to study many aspects of theatre arts, develop valuable life skills, and produce quality plays; NOW, THEREFORE,
Be it resolved by the Council of the City of Toledo:
SECTION 1. That we recognize the storied history of the Ohio Theatre and wish the Children’s Theatre Workshop continued success in restoring the theatre as a destination for the theatre community as well as being a positive place for young people in the Toledo area.
SECTION 2. That this Resolution shall take effect and be in force from and after the earliest period allowed by law.
