Designating a portion of Miller St. as "Robert M. Powell, Sr. Way".

Summary
WHEREAS, Robert M. Powell, Sr. was born in 1917 in Drew, Mississippi, and after high school and working as a Pullman Porter relocated to Toledo for employment; and

WHEREAS, Mr. Powell along with his brother, a barber, who at that time could not buy African American haircare products in Toledo and the Powell brothers would acquire their supplies from Detroit and Ann Arbor and provide them at wholesale prices from the trunk of his car to licensed beauticians and barbers in the Toledo area; and

WHEREAS, eventually in 1964 Mr. Powell's endeavor to bring quality hair care products to Toledo lead him to open a brick and mortar storefront at 547 Nebraska Ave. and "Powell's Beauty & Barber Supply" was established, and in 1972 the business relocated to its current location at 901 Nebraska Ave.; and

WHEREAS, Powell's Beauty & Barber Supply continues to be a fourth generation, family-owned and operated business that serves the community as well as beauty salons, barber shops and educational centers, and Powell's also provides delivery services to the community, invites other small business owners to sell product in their store, and hosts an annual block party to engage the surrounding community enhancing economic growth and opportunity for all; NOW, THEREFORE,

Be it resolved by the Council of the City of Toledo:

SECTION 1. That this Council does hereby recognize the contributions and legacy of Robert M. Powell, Sr. and designates a portion of Miller St., from Nebraska Ave. to Tecumseh St. as "Robert M. Powell, Sr. Way".

SECTION 2. That this Resolution shall take effect and be in force from and after the earliest period allowed by law.
