Designating a portion of Adams St. “Louis P. Escobar Way”.

 

Summary

WHEREAS, Louis P. Escobar was a graduate of Central Catholic High School class of 1968, received his bachelor's degree from St. Mary's College, a Master of Divinity from SS Cyril and Methodius Seminary, and a Master of Arts degree from the University of Detroit. He was ordained to the priesthood in 1976 and served St. Joseph Tiffin, St. Agnes Toledo, and St. Joseph Maumee parishes. He also taught at Central Catholic and Tiffin Calvert high schools; and

 

WHEREAS, upon leaving the priesthood, Louis worked in the criminal justice system as a counselor and probation officer. He later worked for the HIV/AIDS Task Force, the Zepf Center, Adelante, La Posada, Owens Corning, and the University of Toledo; and

 

WHEREAS, in 1997 Louis Escobar was elected to the Toledo City Council and served as its first Latino and openly gay man. He was re-elected and served three consecutive years as President of Toledo City Council; and
            

                     WHEREAS, throughout his life Louis remained dedicated to mentoring people and albeit he left the priesthood, the call to serve remained with him and his legacy will live far beyond his earthly life; NOW, THEREFORE,

 

Be it resolved by the Council of the City of Toledo:

 

SECTION 1. That this Council does hereby recognize the impact of the legacy to the Toledo Community by Louis P. Escobar and designates a portion of Adams St., from 21st St to Michigan Ave., as “Louis P. Escobar Way”.

 

SECTION 2.  That this Resolution shall take effect and be in force from and after the earliest period allowed by law.
