Recognizing Toledo native William Provonsha for his service to our country during World War II.

Summary
WHEREAS, Mr. William Provonsha is a Toledo native, veteran, and one of the greatest generation who served his country proudly in World War II; and

WHEREAS, Mr. Provonsha was born in Toledo, Ohio and graduated from Morrison Waite High School in East Toledo, August of 1942, Mr. Provonsha married Mary Louise Scott; and

WHEREAS, Mr. Provonsha enlisted in the Army in October of 1942, and in September of 1943, Mr. Provonsha joined the 381st Bomb Group, 532 Bomb Squadron, 8th Air Force, he flew his first mission on October 14, 1943; and

WHEREAS, Mr. Provonsha flew a total of twenty-two missions over France and Germany then on March 6, 1944, the plane he was assigned to was shot down returning from a mission over Berlin, all ten crew members parachuted out over Cologne, and were taken prisoner; and

WHEREAS, Mr. Provonsha was held as a POW and escaped during "the March" and eventually escaped with fellow airman John Plotz, he then returned home and was honorably discharged on August 8, 1945; and

WHEREAS, Mr. Provonsha has been awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross with one Oak Leaf Cluster, Air Medal with five Oak Leaf Clusters, POW medal, European African Middle Eastern Service ribbon with 5 Bronze Battle Stars, Good Conduct Medal, WWII Victory Medal, Presidential Unit Citation ribbon with Oak Leaf Cluster, and the French Legion of Honor; NOW, THEREFORE,

Be it resolved by the Council of the City of Toledo:

SECTION 1 That we recognize the distinguished service and life of Mr. William Provonsha and we appreciate the sacrifices that you made for our country.

SECTION 2. That this Resolution shall take effect and be in force from and after the earliest period allowed by law.
