Title
Resolution expressing support for regional public transit.

Summary
WHEREAS, our City and region will thrive if more people enjoy quality access to more jobs, educational institutions, opportunities, and events; and

WHEREAS, a strong Toledo depends on the availability of public transit to help individuals in getting to work, school, and other activities; and

WHEREAS, our current transit system is inadequately funded due to its piecemeal organizational structure whereby certain communities such as Toledo are members of the transit system, but neighboring suburban communities have refused to join; and

WHEREAS, the Toledo Area Regional Transit System (TARTA) has tried to place in front of voters a ballot issue to allow a change to a more regional system funded by a sales tax instead of the current property taxes; and

WHEREAS, TARTA did create a strategic plan to address some of the issues related to the proposed ballot issue; and

WHEREAS, an expanded transit system in Lucas County would increase opportunities for all individuals to employment, education, and community services - thus creating a more vibrant and successful community; NOW, THEREFORE,

Be it resolved by the Council of the City of Toledo:

SECTION 1. That the Toledo City Council respects the rights of voters to be able to choose the preferred method of supporting public transit in our region.

SECTION 2. That the Toledo City Council encourages all members of the Toledo Area Regional Transit Authority to pass resolutions allowing a ballot issue to be placed upon the ballot.

SECTION 3. That the Clerk of Council is hereby directed to send a copy of this resolution to these member communities.

SECTION 4. That this Resolution shall be in full force and effect from and after the earliest date allowed by law.
