Summary
WHEREAS, Ms. Mona Al-Hayani, a teacher for 23 years, received the State Board District 2 Teacher of the Year award and the Ohio Department of Education's title of Ohio's 2019 Teacher of the Year and will represent Ohio in the 2019 National Teacher of the Year selection sponsored by the Council of Chief State School Officers; and

WHEREAS, Ms. Mona Al-Hayani, a teacher at Toledo Early College High School, teaches history and advises the National Honor Society and Young Women for Change; has earned her National Board for Professional Teaching Standards certification; and

WHEREAS, Ms. Mona Al-Hayani is also a two-time U.S. Department of Education Fulbright-Hays awardee, who has traveled the world as a teacher leader and researcher with a global perspective that comes in part from being the daughter of parents from Iraq and Lebanon - as does her belief that being an active participant in the democratic process ensures equal rights and an informed citizenry; and

WHEREAS, Ms. Mona Al-Hayani, a native of Toledo and a proud graduate of Rogers High School earned a bachelor's degree in sociology and a master's degree in secondary education from the University of Toledo; and

WHEREAS, Ms. Mona Al-Hayani is the vice president of the Toledo Federation of Teachers and is the union's director of Human Trafficking, Civil Rights and Social Justice Issues where Ms. Mona Al-Hayani has trained more than 10,000 individuals on human trafficking with a curriculum which focuses on the risk factors and teaches youth about human trafficking awareness, social media safety and positive body and mental image; NOW, THEREFORE,

Be it resolved by the Council of the City of Toledo:

SECTION 1. That we recognize Ms. Mona Al-Hayani for her continued passion to nurture and expand the minds and hearts of students by teaching them skills that they can use for the rest...
