A resolution declaring October Correct Recycling Awareness Month.
Summary
WHEREAS, recycling allows materials that would otherwise be thrown out to be reused or manufactured into new materials, decreasing landfill waste and lowering Toledo's environmental impact; and
WHEREAS, groups like Toledo-Lucas County Sustainability Commission and Keep Toledo / Lucas County Beautiful are putting forth effort in educating the community on correct recycling; and
WHEREAS, the incorrect recycling of grass and yard waste, plastic bags, garbage, clothing and textiles, and electronics are contaminating recyclables; and
WHEREAS, incorrect recycling is costing the taxpayers a significant amount of money in increased transportation and processing costs; and
WHEREAS, the contamination of recyclables by grass and yard waste, plastic bags, garbage, clothing and textiles, and electronics is causing up to 42% of Toledo's recycling to be sent to the landfill; and
WHEREAS, the Council of the City of Toledo will further educate itself and its constituents about correct recycling and sustainability efforts and encourage community members to lead civically-engaged lives; and
WHEREAS, the celebration of Correct Recycling Awareness Month will increase knowledge in our community of how correct recycling will benefit the environment and community members; NOW, THEREFORE,
Be it resolved by the Council of the City of Toledo
SECTION 1. That the month of October is hereby declared Correct Recycling Awareness Month.
SECTION 2. That this Resolution shall take effect and be in force from and after the earliest period allowed by law.
